Nazarenes in the News is a compilation of news articles primarily featuring USA/Canada Region churches or church members.

Prayer in the wake of tragedies

The news was dominated this past week with several tragedies, from natural disasters to three significant shootings.

On Sunday, March 8, a gunman entered the First Baptist Church of Maryville, Illinois, and shot and killed the pastor, Fred Winters. NCN News received word that the grandson of a Nazarene couple attends this church with his family. Prayer is requested for the church's congregation.

Also on Sunday, a string of tornadoes struck in Indiana and Illinois, damaging homes, businesses, and at least one church. High winds also caused damage in Ohio. Nazarene districts in Indiana and Illinois report no damage to Nazarene homes or churches, though the Southwest Indiana District states two tornadoes were very close to their office in Bedford. Also, according to the Kankakee Daily Journal, an Easter Seals Telethon was taking place at Olivet Nazarene University's Chalfant Hall when tornado sirens sounded and university officials ordered an evacuation. Entertainers, technicians and volunteers were directed to stand in interior hallways before being given the all-clear.

The U.S. Midwest is also bracing for possible severe flooding this spring as many of the damaged areas from last summer's floods are still being rebuilt - including levees and drainage systems. Prayer is requested for those who have suffered loss and for God's protection in the coming months.

On Wednesday, the worst mass shooting in Alabama history took place as a gunman killed 10 and wounded six in two rural southern Alabama counties before turning the gun on himself. Prayer is requested for the families of the victims.

Outside the USA/Canada Region, a teenager stormed a high school in Germany and killed 15 before taking his own life on Wednesday. The incident was Germany's worst school shooting since 2002, when 16 and the gunman were killed in a high school. Prayer is requested for the victims' families.
