At the recent 2009 Global Nazarene Youth International (NYI) Convention, the Paul Skiles Endowment was launched in honor of the ministry and leadership Skiles brought to the Church of the Nazarene. Over $12,000 (U.S.) was raised and will go toward furthering the development of global youth ministry.
Paul Skiles served as the executive secretary of Nazarene Young People's Society (director of what is now NYI) from 1961 to 1974. During his tenure, he proved to be instrumental in the establishment of ministries and events that continue as part of the NYI strategy today. For example, the International Institute event was started and is now known as Nazarene Youth Conference (NYC), which is held on regions, fields, and in countries all over the world. The Bible Quiz ministry was created with the very first national quiz being held 45 years ago at the 1964 General Assembly; it is now a world-wide ministry involving thousands of young people. Nazarene Evangelistic Ambassadors, now known as Youth in Mission, was also developed, giving young people the opportunity to serve through the mission strategy of the Church of the Nazarene worldwide.
"The establishment of this youth ministry endowment honors a visionary youth leader and enables the continued expansion of ministry to young people worldwide," remarked current NYI Director Gary Hartke. "Skiles had a vision for global youth ministry, exemplified in 1974 with the first World Youth Congress held in Switzerland."
All funds designated to the Paul Skiles Youth Ministry Endowment will be utilized to fund youth ministry worldwide.
To contribute to this endowment, make checks payable to the Church of the Nazarene Foundation. On the check's memo line, indicate it is for the Paul Skiles Youth Ministry Endowment Fund and send to the Church of the Nazarene Foundation, 13795 S. Mur-Len Road, Suite 101, Olathe, KS 66062.
