Duarte celebrates advances in Costa Rica

Eugénio R. Duarte, jurisdictional general superintendent for the Mexico/Central America Region, recently conducted the district assembly of the Costa Rica North District, where significant gains were reported in membership and financial stewardship.
With 15 churches and 855 members, the Costa Rica North District celebrated a 13 percent growth in membership. Of the 15 congregations, 14 reported gains. Together they paid 105 percent of their approved World Evangelism Fund goal. They are led by District Superintendent Johnny Calvo, who also serves as pastor of the largest church on the district, the Poás Church of the Nazarene.
Calvo challenged every church to continue Christian stewardship by contributing a tithe of monies raised for all purposes - 10 percent to go to the World Evangelism Fund, education, and the district.
A report to the Costa Rica delegates on theological education revealed that extension education courses online are becoming available to everyone, making training more affordable than ever for pastors. Duarte also presided over the Nicaragua Central District Assembly at Managua First Church. In her first year of leadership, District Superintendent María Antonia Ponce Espinoza reported the organization of one new church and the launch of five new church-type missions. Here and on the Nicaragua Southeast District, Duarte ordained a total of four new elders.
Everywhere he went, Duarte brought current reports of the precarious situation in Haiti since the January 2010 earthquake, the hurricane, and the cholera outbreak. He asked for renewed prayer for our suffering brothers and sisters in Haiti.
"The biggest challenge," he said, "is for us to remain committed to spreading the Word and making Christlike disciples."
