PLNU places second in California CPA exam
San Diego, California
For the third year in a row, Point Loma Nazarene University ranked among the top three California universities for the Certified Public Accounting (CPA) examination as reported by the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy.

"These results are particularly satisfying because only PLNU and UCLA have placed in the top three each year for the last three years," said Ivan Filby, dean of PLNU's Fermanian School of Business.

PLNU graduates ranked second in both pass rate and average score in California for 2012. Forty-one PLNU candidates had a 67.5 percent pass rate and 76.8 average score. Pomona College's seven candidates ranked first with 86.7 percent and 82.2 score. UCLA's 494 candidates finished third with 62.5 percent and 75.3 score.

Nationally, PLNU ranked 13th (top 5 percent) among "Medium Programs" for candidates taking the exam for the first time. NASBA classifies universities by size of program based on number of candidates. There were 260 institutions in the medium program category (21 to 60 candidates).

"PLNU has exceptional accounting students that are sought after by the most prestigious national, statewide, and local accounting firms," said Steve Cosentino, associate professor of accounting.

This year, for example, 50 percent of the graduating class have job offers from accounting firms in both tax and audit. Five of the 19 accounting graduates already have offers from the "Big 4" firms.

"These results continue to be a testament to the dedication and hard work our alumni take into the business community," said Carl Hammond, faculty advisor for the student accounting society. "The PLNU accounting program does not 'teach to the test'; rather we emphasize a rock-solid accounting foundation enhanced by personal values articulated throughout the PLNU liberal arts-based curriculum."
