David W. Graves, director of Sunday School Ministries (SSM) and himself a product of Sunday School, highlighted the continuing theme for SSM, “Make the Connection… with Christ, with God's Word, with others, and with mission" during the Saturday evening Sunday School-emphasis service. Graves drove home the importance of Sunday School in the lives of all individuals from childhood through senior adulthood. He also spoke of the impact unique resources such as Prime Time Ministries, Single Adult Ministries, Women's Ministries, Men's Ministries, Family Life Ministries, Continuing Lay Training, and Children's Ministries can have on the church and community. Sunday School continues to be one of the church's most powerful ways to affirm the Word of God as the foundation for living the Christian life. In addition, it is through Sunday School that churches can challenge all ages to be disciples of Jesus Christ and to invite others to do the same.
General Superintendent Paul G. Cunningham spoke on life lessons learned in Sunday School. No one will ever forget his compelling illustration based on an engine malfunction and the resources of the OnStar system. Cunningham connected the ever-present assistance available through OnStar with the biblical truth of God's unfailing interest and care of his children.
Sunday School remains the place where the church can help individuals live the holy life through mutual support, Christian fellowship, and loving accountability. In the words of General Superintendent and former Sunday School Ministries Director W. Talmadge Johnson, “Sunday School is back."
Highlighting the Saturday night service was a 500-voice children's choir. The choir opened the worship service in song by premiering the Lillenas Publishing (Nazarene Publishing House) song, “Lighthouse in the Night." The song enthusiastically challenges everyone to share his or her faith.
