Facts about the Gospel
Here are some facts about the Gospel accounts of the Christmas story:
  • No account of Jesus' birth can be found in the Gospels of Mark and John.
  • Only in Luke's account does an angel appear to Mary to announce Jesus' impending birth. Matthew alone tells the story of an angel appearing to Joseph in a dream.
  • Matthew and Luke are unified on the facts that Mary was a virgin when she conceived and that Jesus' birthplace was Bethlehem.
  • Luke is alone in sharing Joseph and Mary's journey from Nazareth to Jerusalem. He is also the only writer to tell of the infant Jesus' manger-crib and the angelic encounter of the shepherds.
  • Only Matthew gives an account of the trek of the wise men to see Jesus, Herod's murder of Bethlehem children, and the flight of Jesus' family to Egypt.
