The 900-plus delegates of the General Nazarene Missions International (NMI) Convention unanimously approved the reorganized NMI Constitution during the opening plenary session on Thursday morning, June 23. “I am gratified with the overwhelming affirmation of this important legislation," says Nina Gunter, general NMI director.
The General NMI Council voted more than two years ago to begin the process of reorganizing the information in the Constitutions and Bylaws. The Constitution Committee, chaired by Wes Eby, created one document out of the six current documents. While reorganizing the content, the committee, which included international representation, eliminated ambiguous, repetitive, and out-of-date language.
“The major changes in content are minimal," says Eby. Three brief articles were added regarding structure, policies and procedures, and parliamentary authority. Some information that does not need to be legislated will be placed in the NMI Handbook. “It's certainly a more user-friendly Constitution for NMI throughout the world," Eby adds."
“This strong vote clearly indicates that the committee did their work well," says Gunter. “This document will serve the church."
