Citing the history of the Church of the Nazarene and its development of “centers of holy fire," General Superintendent Jim L. Bond described our nearly 100 year pilgrimage as a commitment to the “primary passion to ‘spread scriptural holiness'" as the driving force of our existence. “Our 21st century world is seething in a cauldron of despair,“ stated Bond. “What a time for the Church of the Nazarene."
Bond continued, “We have the message so desperately needed by the world's grim, despairing masses—Jesus the Hope." Referring to the 254 Nazarene JESUS film teams, Bond noted that the Gospel is being spread in 155 languages in 98 world areas. To date, 4,795,308 decisions for Christ have been registered. Nearly 2 million of these individuals are involved in initial discipleship. New pastors are being trained and nearly 6,000 mission churches have been started.
In his report, Bond said, “The Church of the Nazarene is on the move throughout the world." There are currently 19 Nazarene congregations with more than 1,000 in attendance. World Evangelism Fund and Mission Specials totaled just over $270 million (U.S.). Eight hundred missionaries serve in 149 world areas. Sunday School attendance is at 769,396, and Nazarene Youth International membership stands at 336,950.
Bond revealed the Board of General Superintendents has established three ministry priorities:
1. We must do compassionate evangelism
2. We must make Christ-like disciples
3. We must start new churches
Elaborating further, Bond said, “Our discipling process must also deliberately focus on developing leaders. Our leadership cultivation must also include the new generation of youth that has burst forth on the 21st century stage."
Anticipating the Centennial Celebration, Bond reiterated the goals associated with the coming celebration:
• 1 million new Nazarenes
• 2 million in membership
• 2 million in weekly worship attendance
• 1 million in Sunday School attendance
• 18,000 churches
Concluding his remarks, Bond added, “Let's fan into flame the gift of God which is within us!"
